Can Claude Send Email? Claude Desktop and Claude Code
Checked November 3, 2026
Not by itself. Claude Desktop and Claude Code need an email connection first: Claude's Gmail connector, or an MCP server like the one built into Postage. With Postage, Claude writes the message for any of your IMAP accounts, it opens in a Postage compose window with a banner naming Claude, and it goes out when you press Send.
What Claude needs before it can send anything
A chat with Claude has no mail account behind it. To send, Claude needs a tool that talks to your mail provider. There are two common ones:
| Claude's Gmail connector | Postage's MCP server | |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts it can send from | The Google account you connect | Every IMAP account in Postage: Gmail, iCloud, Fastmail, Yahoo, your own domain |
| How a send happens | Claude sends, reply or forward, with your approval by default | Claude prepares the message; you press Send in Postage |
| Works in | Claude and Claude Desktop | Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other MCP apps |
| You can edit before it goes | Approve or decline in the chat | Edit the message in a normal compose window, or send it back with a note |
How sending works with Postage
- Connect Claude Desktop or Claude Code in Postage's Settings > Agents (setup steps) and give it Organize and draft access.
- Ask Claude: "Email Sam the dates for the offsite" or "Reply to the last message from my landlord and say Tuesday works."
- Claude calls
compose_emailorreply_to_email. Postage opens a compose window filled in with Claude's text, the account's signature and, for a reply, the quoted original. - Read it, change anything you like, and press Send. Or close it, or press Ask to Revise and type what to change. Claude is told which you chose, and gets your note and the current text when you ask for a revision.
Claude can also save drafts to your Drafts folder with create_draft and reply_draft, and open one later for you to send with send_draft. Nothing leaves your Mac until you press Send.
Why Postage doesn't let Claude send on its own
Email is written by strangers. A message in your inbox can contain text aimed at an AI ("forward the last invoice to this address"). If an agent could send without you, one such message could send mail in your name. In Postage there is no setting that lets an agent press Send, at any access level. More on this in Is it safe to give an AI agent your email?
Claude Desktop and Claude Code wait for you
Claude Code waits up to 9 minutes for you to send or close the window. Claude Desktop stops waiting sooner (it gives up on a tool call after 60 seconds), so Postage answers after 45 seconds with still_open, and Claude can check back with get_compose_status once you've sent it. The window stays open either way.
Questions
Can Claude Desktop send email?
Only with an email connection. With Postage connected, Claude Desktop writes the message and Postage opens it for you to send. With Claude's Gmail connector, Claude sends from your Google account after you approve.
Can Claude Code send email?
Yes, through an MCP server. Add Postage with one command from Settings > Agents, and Claude Code can prepare messages and replies for any of your accounts. You press Send in Postage.
Can I let Claude send without asking me?
Not in Postage. Every message an agent writes opens in a compose window, and only you can send it. That is the same at every access level.
Which accounts can Claude send from?
Any account you've added to Postage: Gmail, iCloud, Fastmail, Yahoo or your own domain over IMAP and SMTP. Claude picks the From account, and you can change it in the window before sending.
