# Can an AI Agent Unsubscribe You from Email and Clean Your Inbox?

It can clean your inbox, but it can't unsubscribe you through Postage. Postage's tools find newsletters and let an agent archive, file or junk them in one batch you can undo. None of them clicks an unsubscribe link or contacts a mailing list. The agent can list who mails you most, so you know where to unsubscribe yourself.

## What an agent can do

| Job | How it works in Postage |
| --- | --- |
| Find newsletters | `search` with `bulk` true returns mail carrying List-Id, List-Unsubscribe, Auto-Submitted or Precedence: bulk headers |
| Narrow it down | Filter by sender, mailing list, date, folder, unread or size |
| Count before acting | `idsOnly` returns up to 2,000 message references per call |
| Preview | `preview_actions` shows what would change and changes nothing, at every access level |
| Apply | `apply_actions` archives, moves, flags, marks read or junks in one batch |
| Put it back | One Undo for the whole batch, for a week, in Settings > Agents > Activity |

Moving mail to Trash needs Full access. The other changes need **Organize and draft**. Nothing permanently deletes mail.

## What it can't do

- **Unsubscribe.** Postage has no unsubscribe tool, and none of its tools opens a link in a message.
- **Stop future mail.** A newsletter you archive today comes back next week until you unsubscribe from it.
- **Run on its own inside Postage.** Postage has no rules engine. Your instructions live with your agent, and it applies them when you or a scheduled run asks.

Unsubscribe links are written by the sender, and every email reaches your agent as untrusted content. Open those links yourself, for senders you recognize.

## A cleanup to run

Connect your agent ([Claude setup](https://postageformac.com/guides/connect-claude-to-your-email-mac), [Codex setup](https://postageformac.com/guides/codex-chatgpt-email-mac)), give it **Organize and draft**, and paste this:

Ask your agent:

```
Find newsletters and machine-sent mail in my inbox from the last 6 months.
List the 20 senders with the most messages and the count for each.
Then do a dry run that moves anything older than 30 days to a folder
called Newsletters, and show me the totals before you change anything.
```

Read the list, unsubscribe from the senders you're done with, and tell the agent to apply the batch. Check the result in Settings > Agents > Activity, where each change shows the agent's reason.

## Keep it clean

Write what you want in `~/.claude/CLAUDE.md` or `~/.codex/AGENTS.md`, such as "move newsletters older than two weeks to Newsletters", and ask for it when you like. For Claude Code, Settings > Agents > Instructions saves a morning run that applies your skill at 8 AM. Reruns skip mail that's already handled and leave alone anything you moved back by hand. The full routine is in [Organize your inbox with Claude Code](https://postageformac.com/guides/organize-inbox-with-claude-code).

## Questions

### Can Claude unsubscribe me from newsletters?

Not through Postage. Claude can find them, count them per sender and file them away, and you unsubscribe yourself.

### Will an agent archive something I need?

It can get one wrong, so start with a dry run. If a batch goes wrong, press Undo on it in Settings > Agents > Activity, or on a single message.

### Can an agent mark mail as spam?

It can move messages to the account's Junk folder at Organize and draft. What your provider does with that signal is up to your provider.
